No matter who we are, we deserve to live in safe, clean neighborhoods with affordable homes—and not filled with abandoned properties. That’s why Baltimore's City Council is looking at a proposal called the Outer Harbor Initiative.
The Outer Harbor Initiative would help our neighborhoods by:
- Increasing resources to clean up properties that have been grossly neglected by their owners
- Spurring new public-private partnerships among banks, the city and developers to renovate abandoned properties
- Coordinating with neighborhood associations, marketing organizations and realtors to fill once-vacant homes with new residents
While the last decades have seen progress in the Inner Harbor, the Outer Harbor Initiative would focus on the next ring of neighborhoods that surround those areas.
Benefits would include:
- Enhanced public safety and neighborhood stability
- Increased opportunities for rentals and homeownership for all income levels
- The creation of neighborhood jobs in construction and small business
- An increase of money flowing INTO the city instead of out of it
The growing list of partners that support the Outer Harbor Initiative includes Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity, Arundel Habitat for Humanity, Civic Works, The Community Law Center, Patterson Park Neighborhood Association, and Paul's Place.
